Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address. The Arnold Arboretum is named in honor of James Arnold, a merchant from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who died in 1868 leaving a bequest to be devoted to the advancement of agriculture or horticulture.Historical NotesRepairs to the gates at Arnold Arboretum have taken place over time often using pieces from other gates and new parts resulting in gates with more details than others and having a mix of new and old parts. In 2002 a major restoration project at the Arnold Arboretum took place mainly focusing on the Bussey Street and Walter Street Gates with the Walter Street Gate being an entirely new reproduction. Old pieces of the gates were moved to storage at 26 Arboretum Road in Roslindale, Mass. as of 2012.
