Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its function.Historical NotesThe Harvard Depository was built to house Harvard's overflow library collections including books, archival collections and other media. The facility provides a strictly regulated media preservation environment, inventory-tracking and retrieval of material. As of 2010, the Harvard Depository housed 45 percent of Harvard's collections as well as collections from other institutions. The Harvard Depository was first proposed to the Harvard University Planning Group in 1983 by director of the University Library, Oscar Handlin and was designed to allow for expansion which as taken place in several phases.
