Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address on Sumner Road, which is named for William Hyslop Sumner. Sumner was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1780 and later attended Harvard College as the class of 1799. He practiced law and was active in local and state government. His most notable achievement was his involvement in the land planning and development of Noddles Island which became the neighborhood, East Boston. Historical NotesThe building on this parcel was constructed as a private residence in 1845. It was purchased by Harvard in 1971 and demolished the same year.
