Site Name HistoryThe site is named for Charles Stratton Dana (1871-1917), through the generosity of his daughter, Martha Dana Mercer. The Arnold Arboretum is named in honor of James Arnold, a merchant from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who died in 1868 leaving a bequest to be devoted to the advancement of agriculture or horticulture.Historical NotesThe Dana Greenhouses were designed by the firm of Griswold, Boyden, Wylde and Ames of Boston and constructed in 1962 for work in plant propagation and the study of living plants.
