Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its location.Historical NotesBequeathed to Harvard by Samuel Ward in 1680, Bumpkin Island was leased to tenant farmers. By the early nineteenth century the island hosted a fish-drying operation. In 1900, Boston philanthropist Albert Burrage leased the island from Harvard and built a hospital for children with physical disabilities. The island was taken by eminent domain by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1974. The island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.
