Professors George L. Goodale and Oakes Ames were instrumental in founding the facility in collaboration with E. Atkins & Co., a sugarcane plantation.

The garden was impacted by hurricanes in 1919, 1926, 1927, 1929, and 1935. While the University never owned the property, it ceded all interest, control, and oversight of the land and research facilities in 1960 when it was taken over by the revolutionary government of Fidel Castro.
