Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its function. The Arnold Arboretum is named in honor of James Arnold, a merchant from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who died in 1868 leaving a bequest to be devoted to the advancement of agriculture or horticulture.Historical NotesThe Maintenance Building, located at 125 Arborway, consists of four garage bays for storage of horticulture maintenance vehicles. The building is also used to house tools, supplies and equipment. It was designed by Robert Shaw Sturgis in 1968.
