Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its function. The Arnold Arboretum is named in honor of James Arnold, a merchant from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who died in 1868 leaving a bequest to be devoted to the advancement of agriculture or horticulture.Historical NotesThe Bonsai House, hexagonal, a redwood lath house built to display the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection during the growing season was built in 1962. The Bonsai House was broken into over Columbus Day weekend in 1986 resulting in the theft of some of the original collection. As a result of the theft, the house was renovated with Douglas fir planks replacing some of the deteriorating redwood planks, new doors to allow better viewing of the collection, and a security system.
