Site Name HistoryThe site was named Mount Auburn in 1831 by Jacob Bigelow. It was originally called Stone's Woods and later Sweet Auburn in 1801. Historical NotesMount Auburn Cemetery is known for being the first landscaped rural cemetery in the United States. It was primarily designed by Henry A.S. Dearborn who was the president of the Massachusetts Horticultural Association at the time.

Harvard University began purchasing plots in the cemetery in 1835 for the burial of professors and students who did not have family plots.
