Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its function.Historical NotesThe stables for the Harvard Department of Military Science were constructed in 1922 to accommodate the instruction of the Field Artillery Unit. The Department of Military Science was established in 1916 under Harvard president Abbott Lawrence Lowell. It was the predecessor to the ROTC program.

The stables and barracks accommodated 20 men and 85 horses. The stables were located across from the Newell Boathouse in the approximate area of the current field hockey fields.
