Site Name HistoryThe site is named after the ancestral estate of Charles Delevan Wetmore's family near Wolverhampton, England called "Claverly." Wetmore was a founding member of the architecture firm Warren and Wetmore and commissioned the construction of Claverly Hall.Historical NotesClaverly Hall, designed by George Fogerty and completed in 1893, was built as a private dormitory along Mount Auburn Street. It was the first of the "Gold Coast" private luxury dormitory buildings to be constructed. The building was originally designed with fifty-five suites, each with a private bath. It also featured steam heat and a now-closed swimming pool on the ground floor. Harvard purchased the building in 1920. For many years it was used as housing for sophomores who had not been accepted into one of the "River Houses." Today it continues to be used as an undergraduate residence and is part of Adams House.
