Site Name HistoryThe site is named after Sir Matthew Holworthy, a London merchant who bequeathed £1000 to Harvard College upon his death in 1678.Historical NotesHolworthy Hall was built as a dormitory for Harvard students, a role it continues to serve today. It forms the northern boundary of the Old Yard and was the first building to positioned east of the open quadrangles created by Harvard Hall, Hollis Hall and Stoughton Hall.

The design is attributed to Loammi Baldwin (A.B. 1800). The construction of the building was funded by the proceeds of a lottery authorized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the estate of Sir Matthew Holworthy. An 1871 renovation of the building altered its appearance at the roof line. Holworthy Hall was the first building at Harvard to be lighted by gas.
