InscriptionsThe Harvard Stadium Built in 1903 as the twenty fifth anniversary gift of the Class of 1879, supplemented by the funds of the Harvard Athletic Association. The first massive structure of reinforced concrete in the world. The first large premanent arena for American college athletics. Designed by members of the faculty of engineering in conformity with classical tradition and constructed under the general direction of Ira Nelson Hollis A.M. (Hon.) professor of engineering. The plans were drawn on Soldiers Field under the direction of Lewis Jerome Johnson A.B. 1887 C.E. 1888 professor of civil engineering. Joseph Ruggles Worcester A.B. 1882 consulting engineer. Charles Follen McKim A.M. (Hon.) and George Bruno de Gersdorff A.B. 1888 consulting architects. This tablet was erected by the Harvard Engineering Society on November 14, 1953 the fiftieth anniversary of the dedication of the stadium.
