InscriptionsUniversity Hall (1813-1815) was designed by Charles Bulfinch (Harvard Classof 1781) and is a National Historic Landmark. The statue is by Daniel Chester French. It represents John Harvard of whom no known likeness exists, The model was Sherman Hoar Class of 1882. John Harvard (1607-1638) was a graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge who emigrated to America in 1637. On his death he left his library and half his estate to the "colledge at Newtowne," which had been established by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1636. In appreciation of John Harvard's generosity, the "colledge" was renamed Harvard College in 1638, when the first students enrolled.
