Biography: Frank Ellis Alden was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts and studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1880 he began working in the office of H. H. Richardson. After Richardson's death he joined the partnership of Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. and Alfred Branch Harlow in 1886. This partnership with Longfellow continued for a decade until it dissolved in 1896. Alden continued to work with Harlow in the firm Alden & Harlow until his death in 1908.
Biography: Alfred Branch Harlow was born in Middleborough, Massachusetts and studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After completing his studies he joined the Boston firm of Cabot & Chandler. In 1881 he joined the firm of McKim, Mead & White in New York City. His work with McKim, Mead & White eventually brought him back to Boston and in 1886 he formed a partnership A.W. Longfellow, Jr. a former colleague from Cabot & Chandler, called Longfellow, Alden & Harlow .
In 1891 Longfellow, Alden & Harlow received a commission with the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh which lead to Harlow leaving Boston. The partnership with Longfellow eventually dissolved and the firm continued as Alden & Harlow from 1896 until Alden’s death in 1908.

Longfellow, Jr. continued his practice in Boston and Alden & Harlow formed their own firm in Pittsburgh.
