Biographical InformationJohn Smibert was a Scottish American artist and architect who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1688. He studied painting at London's Great Queen Street's Academy in 1713 and later had his own studio in Covent Garden.

In 1728 he left England for America and settled in Boston by 1730. He was a well-known portraitist who is credited with establishing the tradition of colonial portraiture in Boston. He later drew the plans for the original Faneuil Hall marketplace.
