Frederick Law Olmsted

Biographical InformationFrederick Law Olmsted was a prominent, American, landscape architect and designer. His most well-known works include New York City’s Central Park and Boston’s Emerald Necklace. Olmsted was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1822. After a design competition, in 1858 he began working with Calvert Vaux on the design of Central Park which brought him national acclaim. He went on to design parks for many cities and college campuses.

One of his many firms and partnerships, the Brookline, Massachusetts-based Olmsted, Olmsted and Eliot was founded in 1893. The firm was led by Frederick Law Olmsted, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., John Charles Olmsted, and Charles Eliot. The firm was succeeded by Olmsted Brothers in 1898.
