Biographical InformationFrederick Grinnell, a pioneer in fire safety and credited with manufacturing the first automatic sprinkler system, was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1836. In 1892 he organized the General Fire Extinguisher Company, which became known as the Grinnell, Co. after his death in 1919.

In 1969 Grinnell, Co. was purchased by International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) and became known as ITT Grinnell. ITT eventually sold this portion of its portfolio to the Tyco Group. In 2001 Grinnell Fire Protection was merged with the Simplex Time Recorder Company to form SimplexGrinnell.

Johnson Controls, an international conglomerate which produces fire, HVAC, and security equipment, merged with Tyco International in 2016. Johnson Controls was founded in 1885 as the Johnson Electric Service Company. In 2017 it was announced that all brand identity related to Grinnell Fire Protection Company and SimplexGrinnell would be transitioned to Johnson Controls.
