Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address on Sumner Road, which is named for William Hyslop Sumner. Sumner was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1780 and later attended Harvard College as the class of 1799. He practiced law and was active in local and state government. His most notable achievement was his involvement in the land planning and development of Noddles Island which became the neighborhood, East Boston. Historical Notes20 Sumner Road was built in 1923 and acquired by Harvard in 2010 for use by the Graduate School of Design. In 2016 the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Norwegian architecture firm, Snohetta, began a renewal project to create a net zero building.Additional Information
