Site Name HistoryThe site is named for Horatio Hollis Hunnewell (1810-1902), a banker, horticulturist and benefactor of the Arnold Arboretum. The Arnold Arboretum is named in honor of James Arnold, a merchant from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who died in 1868 leaving a bequest to be devoted to the advancement of agriculture or horticulture.Historical NotesThe Hunnewell Building was built as the main administrative building for the Arnold Arboretum in 1892. It was designed by Longfellow Alden and Harlow of Boston.
