Site Name HistoryThe site is named after the name of the original architect, Josephine Wright Chapman.Historical NotesCraigie Hall, now known as the Chapman Arms, once functioned as a private dormitory building for Harvard students during the early twentieth century when there was not enough housing for students on-campus. During World War I the building housed activities related to the United States Naval Radio School, which occupied a portion of Cambridge and Harvard's campus from 1917 to 1919.Harvard acquired the apartment building in 1967 and during the late 1970s and early 1980s tenant disputes with the University complicated renovation plans. In 2012, the City of Cambridge, Harvard and the nonprofit Homeowners Rehab Inc. struck a deal to maintain affordable apartments in the building and to have Homeowners Rehab Inc. purchase the building.Additional Information
