Site Name HistoryThe site is named after the Case family who acquired the core property for the botanical garden in 1863. James Case's daughter, Marian Roby Case, bequeathed the property to the Arnold Arboretum in 1942. The site is also named after its address.Historical NotesAfter its construction, the barn was central to Hillcrest Farm, a farm/educational program for local boys. The barn incorporated advanced design for cold storage of fruits and vegetables and had special facilities for storage of manure. An attached greenhouse was used for winter storage of delicate plants and for winter growth of seedlings. Marian Case bequeathed the property to Harvard. Arnold Arboretum once used the house for plant propagation and for educational programs. In 1979 seminar rooms were built inside the barn.Additional Information
