Site Name HistoryThis site is named for John Winthrop, who was the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard and served as the President of the College from 1773-1774. John Winthrop participated in, benefited from, and supported the practice of human enslavement. Historical NotesWinthrop Square Park was originally established as Newtown's open-air market in 1635. It was later developed into a park in 1834 designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The park was restored by Brown and Rowe in 1987.Additional Information
