Site Name HistoryThe site is named after Thomas Jefferson Cowie, in whose honor a plaque is hung on a wall stating: "Thomas Jefferson Cowie, Rear Admiral Supply Corps, U. S. Navy. At his insistence, the first attempts to serve a healthily balanced ration in the Navy were made in in 1882 on board the U. S. S. New Hampshire. He banished 'salt horse and cracker bash' from the high seas."Historical NotesCowie Hall was built in 1943 by the US Navy as a temporary dining hall. It was located on North Harvard Street across from the Stadium and took less than six weeks to construct. Harvard acquired the building in 1946. It was originally scheduled to be demolished in the fall of 1953 as part of a plan to build a driveway from Soldiers Field Road to the Business School parking lot. The plan for the driveway was dropped and Cowie Hall was used to house office machinery.
