Site Name HistoryThe site is named after John Harvard, founding benefactor of Harvard College, whose grandfather, Thomas Rogers built the house. Previously, the house was named Ancient House.Historical NotesHarvard House, located in Stratford-upon-Avon, was built by Thomas Rogers, grandfather of John Harvard, in 1596. Rogers was a Stratford Corporation Alderman along with John Shakespeare, father of William Shakespeare. Harvard House was purchased by Edward Morris of Chicago in 1909 and after undergoing a restoration, was given to Harvard University. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has been maintaining the property on behalf of Harvard University since 1990.
