Site Name HistoryThe site is named after Lucien Howe(1848-1928), an ophthalmologist and first director of the Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.Historical NotesLucien Howe (1848-1928), a Harvard Graduate who studied anatomy under Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, was an ophthalmologist, founder of the Buffalo Eye and Ear Infirmary, and first director of the Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Howe lived and worked at the property on Delaware Avenue for 14 years from 1912-1926. In 1926, Howe gave Harvard $250,000 to establish the Howe Laboratory of Ophthamology.
