Site Name HistoryThe site is named after William Stoughton (1631-1701), former Governor of Massachusetts, who gave the land to Harvard.Historical NotesFormer Massachusetts Governor William Stoughton left Harvard a pasture in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. Stoughton specified that income from the land, along with the income from Stoughton's Marsh, should be used to finance scholarships "in the first place, to a scholar of the town of Dorchester, and if there be none such, to one of the town of Milton, and if in want of such, then to any other well deserving, that shall be most needy."
