Site Name HistoryThe site is named for the Hingham Knitting Company which occupied the entire block in the early twentieth century.Historical NotesThe Hingham Knitting Company, which was a producer of hosiery, was founded in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1906. In 1914, after having outgrown their factory in Hingham they constructed a new facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts which was occupied until the factory moved to Lowell, Massachusetts in 1929. After acquiring the property it was used by the Graduate School of Design as the Harvard Architectural Technology Workshop. The site was occupied for eight days by student protestors in 1971 prior to its demolition. This facility was located on the block which is now occupied by the Harvard University building 10 Akron Street.
