Site Name HistoryThe Class of 1881 Gate was named for the Harvard University Class of 1881 who provided the funds for its construction.Historical NotesThe Class of 1881 Gate was erected in 1906 from funds raised by the Class of 1881. The gate is one of a few yards gates that was not designed by McKim, Mead & White. Originally it opened to the entrance of Phillips Brooks House but has been closed since the early 1960s..It is inscribed with the following: Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free; Class of 1881.
