Site Name HistoryThe Bradstreet Gate was named for Anne Dudley Bradstreet, the first published poet of the American colonies and one of the first European settlers in Cambridge (then called Newtowne). Bradstreet was the daughter of Thomas Dudley who served four terms as governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her husband, Simon Bradstreet, also served as governor. Anne Bradstreet's father was one of the founders of Harvard College, and her husband served on its board of overseers.Historical NotesThe Bradstreet Gate was erected in 1995 and dedicated in 1997.
