Site Name HistoryThe Dudley Gate was named for Thomas Dudley who was the founder of Newtowne (Cambridge) and signed the charter for Harvard College while he was the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1650-1651.Historical NotesThe Dudley Gate was erected in 1915 from funds bequeathed by Caroline Phelps Stokes to her nephew Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes. The gate, which stood over thirty feet in height, had a large clock tower connected to it and was decorated with a life-sized bas relief representing Thomas Dudley.

The gate was razed in 1947 for the construction of the Lamont Library however the benches which flanked the gate were recreated and inscribed with the same inscriptions from the original benches. These reproductions were placed in the adjacent Dudley Garden.

The benches are inscribed with the following: One of thy founders him New England know who staid by thy feeble sides when thou was low; Who spent his state his strength and years with care that after comes in them might have share
