Site Name HistoryThe site is named after Arthur Gilman, co-founder of the Private Collegiate Instruction for Women, later known as the Harvard Annex and finally, Radcliffe College.Historical NotesThe Gilman Gate is named in honor of Arthur Gilman, who along with his wife Stella Scott Gilman, founded the Private Collegiate Instruction for Women in 1879, also known as the Harvard Annex. At the school, located on Appian Way, women were taught by Harvard professors. Later, in 1882, the institution was renamed to Society for the Collegiate Instruction for Women. In 1894 the school was renamed Radcliffe College, after an early Harvard benefactor, Lady Ann Mowlson (née Radcliffe).
