Site Name HistoryThe site is named for Edward Mallinckrodt Sr., (1845-1928) founder of Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. of Saint Louis, Missouri. Mallinckrodt donated a quarter of the funds raised for the construction.Historical NotesMallinckrodt Lab was designed in 1929 by Coolidge Shepley Bulfinch and Abbott of Boston to serve as a Harvard chemistry laboratory. At the time of its construction it was the largest chemistry laboratory on campus. It originally housed the collection of historical scientific instruments. Construction of the lab was funded by a gift of Edward Mallinckrodt of St. Louis and funds from the General Education Board.
