Site Name HistoryThe site is named for Professor Wolcott Gibbs, the chief chemist of the Lawrence Scientific School and Rumford Professor.Historical NotesThe Wolcott Gibbs Memorial Laboratory was built in 1911 and was planned to be one part of the science laboratory complex that was designed by A.W. Longfellow which was never completed. The complex would have occupied the entire area between Oxford Street and Divinity Avenue.

The Gibbs Laboratory was razed to allow for the construction of the Bauer Laboratory. The building was constructed through contributions made by Morris Loeb, James Loeb, Alexander Forbes and others with an original construction cost of $85,000.
