Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address and function.Historical NotesElmwood was built in 1767 for Thomas Oliver, who was to serve briefly as lieutenant governor of colonial Massachusetts. James Russell Lowell, 1819-1891, poet, was born here and lived here most of his life. Harvard has owned the property since 1962, and it is used as a residence by the Harvard President. The building and its surroundings have been designated a National Historic Landmark District by the U.S. Department of Interior.Additional Information2003 winner of the William D. Smith Award from the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board.
