Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address.Historical NotesThe building at 5 Sacramento Street was designed as a single family house by Cambridge architect George Fogerty for the family of James W. Hazen. The house was constructed in 1891. According to newspaper articles of the time, the house was luxurious. It was acquired by Harvard in 1964.The house was built on a parcel of land that abutted what was known as the Somerville Bleachery.
A permit was issued (by Myer Peraner) and an article was written about the house being moved in 1925. However, the ward map seems to indicate that it was the abutting house that was moved. Although the lot got smaller, it's not clear that the house on 5 Sacramento was moved.
Additional notes:
1892 Mr. Hazen gets permit to build stable
ca. 1894-1897- Hazen estate sells home to Charles Dow
1897 Charles Dow, who owned a rendering plant, gets a building permit to add an addition
1904 house was occupied by Fred H. Dow, brother of Charles Dow, who owned the Boston chocolate shop, F.H. Dow & Co.
1906 A Cambridge sewer worker notes an underground stream in the area and determine that this was the source of water for the Somerville Bleachery
1927 Bertram Tremaine had a business at that address -it is not known what this business was
