Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address on Sumner Road, which is named for William Hyslop Sumner. Sumner was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1780 and later attended Harvard College as the class of 1799. He practiced law and was active in local and state government. His most notable achievement was his involvement in the land planning and development of Noddles Island which became the neighborhood, East Boston. Historical Notes11 to 13 Sumner Road was built as a double house in 1845. It was acquired by the university in 1977 and currently houses Harvard affiliates. The site has occasionally been referred to as 11 to 15 Sumner Road in historic documents. Its address has changed over the years and has been previously known as Sumner Street. Sumner Street became Sumner Road in 1906.
