Site Name HistoryThe site is named for John Gordon Torrey, prominent researcher of tree physiology. He was the fifth director of the Maria Moors Cabot Foundation for Botanical Research and oversaw the expansion of the Harvard University Herbaria and the research facilities at the Harvard Forest. He was the Charles Bullard Professor of Forestry and the director of the Harvard Forest from 1984-1990.Historical NotesThe John G. Torrey Laboratory was officially opened in the fall of 1994 after extensive renovations to the building which provided research space for soil and plant science.
