It was built initially to contain 23 dioramas of New England forests designed by Richard T. Fisher, the first director of the Harvard Forest.

The Harvard Forest is comprised of approximately 4,000 acres of land in Petersham, Massachusetts. The Forest houses research facilities and other educational facilities like the Fisher Museum, which is open to the public.
