Site Name HistoryThe site is named for Nathaniel Southgate Shaler (1841-1906), a Harvard paleontologist and geologist who served as dean of Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School from 1891.Historical NotesShaler Hall functions as the main administrative building at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, Massachusetts. The construction of the Shaler Hall was funded through an anonymous gift.

The Harvard Forest is comprised of approximately 4,000 acres of land in Petersham, Massachusetts. The Forest houses research facilities and other educational facilities like the Fisher Museum, which is open to the public.
