Site Name HistoryThe site is named for the Harvard Divinity School.Historical NotesDivinity Hall was the first academic building erected by Harvard outside of Harvard Yard. Completed in 1826 to plans by Solomon Willard. It has been in continuous use by the Divinity School since its construction, and through its history has held an evolving array of uses including classrooms, offices, a chapel and student living quarters. During World War I the building housed activities related to the United States Naval Radio School, which occupied a portion of Harvard's campus from 1917 to 1919.The building was funded by subscription through the Society for the Promotion of Theological Education in addition to university funds. After 1830, the Divinity faculty assumed oversight of the school and dissolved the Society.
