Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address on Sumner Road, which is named for William Hyslop Sumner. Sumner was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1780 and later attended Harvard College as the class of 1799. He practiced law and was active in local and state government. His most notable achievement was his involvement in the land planning and development of Noddles Island which became the neighborhood, East Boston.
Historical Notes3 Sumner Road was designed by George S.R. McLean and built as a three-family house in 1905. It was acquired by Harvard in 1976 and is used to house Harvard affiliates. The address had previously been known as Sumner Street which was changed to Sumner Road in 1906.Related Projects
