Site Name HistoryThe site is named after its address on Sumner Road, which is named for William Hyslop Sumner. Sumner was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1780 and later attended Harvard College as the class of 1799. He practiced law and was active in local and state government. His most notable achievement was his involvement in the land planning and development of Noddles Island which became the neighborhood, East Boston. Historical Notes7 Sumner Road was designed by Boston architect Hamilton Harlow and built as an apartment building in 1917. It was acquired by Harvard in 1976 and converted to offices for the Graduate School of Design.
